The protection classifications are indicated by a code cosisting of the two unchanging letters IP, and two digits for the protection grade.

Protection grades against water

Second digit Scope of protection
Significance Symbol Explanation
0 No protection   -
1 Protection against dripping water Drops of water falling vertically must not cause any damage.
2 Protection against water while the enclosure is inclined by up to 15 Drios of water falling vertically must not cause any damage when the enclosure is inclined by up to 15 to both sides of the vertical.
3 Protection against sprays Water spraying at any angle up to 60 to both sides of the vertical must not cause any damage.
4 Protection against splash water Water splashed at the enclosure from any direction must not cause any damage.
5 Protection against jets of water Jets of water directed at the enclosure from any angle must not cause any damage.
6 Protection against heavy of water Heavy jets of water directed at the enclosure from any angle must not cause any damage.
7 Protection against the effects of temporary immersion in water Water may not enter in harmful quantities when the enclosure is temporarily immersed in water under the given pressure and time conditions.
8 Protection against the effects of permanent immersion in water Water may not enter in harmful quantities when the enclosure is immersed in water permanently under conditions that must be agreed upon between manfucturer and user. However, the conditions must be harder than for digit 7.
